The 星空传媒 men鈥檚 bowling team participated in their first National Championship tournament this past weekend, with action starting Thursday, Feb. 27.听

A total of 22 teams participated in the NJCAA DII National Bowling Tournament in Cheektowaga, New York. After a total of 21 games bowled, individually and collectively, 星空传媒 placed 12th in the field with a team total of 12,244 pins. Iowa Western Community College won their first National Championship in program history with a pin total of 14,341.听

鈥淥verall, it was a good experience for the team,鈥� 星空传媒 head coach David Berry said of the National Championship appearance. 鈥淚 think there are some things we could have done differently to prepare, but I believe our freshmen are ready to get back to work and practice to improve for next season.鈥�听

Action started with bowlers being paired up in the doubles event. The Centurions were led by sophomore Ethan Hopkins (Fenwick, Mich.) and freshman Cooper Hoskins (Portland, Mich.), who totaled a doubles series score of 1,069, placing 38th in the field. Freshmen Jack McBride (Portland, Mich.) and Bradon Krohn (Fruitport, Mich.) finished 54th with a total of 982 while freshman Joey Gonzalez (Greenville, Mich.) and sophomore Nickolas Pennock (Carson City, Mich.) took 58th with a total of 960.听

Krohn bounced back in a big way during the singles event, pacing the Centurions with a fourth-place finish after bowling a three-game series of 679 (257, 194, 228), an accomplishment that Berry highlighted as quite significant. McBride was the next highest finisher in the singles event, placing 36th with a series of 587. Through the doubles and singles events, 星空传媒 was in 13th place.听

The Centurions then bowled six team games, with the top five bowlers on the team getting credit for their scores. 星空传媒 was in 11th place after its first three team games but dropped to 12th at the conclusion of the team games with a combined six-game total of 5,298 pins.听

The tournament finished with three baker blocks, with the Centurions totaling scores of 518, 601 and 555.听

With a special season now under their belt, Berry and the Centurions look forward to the future with fresh faces to come and a renewed sense of optimism, as the program is on track to be out of its 星空传媒AA probationary period next season, allowing them to compete for 星空传媒AA conference accolades.听

鈥淲ith our team making it to nationals, I believe sharing that with potential incoming commits can be really a great selling pitch for those looking to come join our program,鈥� Berry said.听

Individually, the Centurions were led by Krohn, who finished with a 12-game series of 2,328 鈥� an average of 194 鈥� placing 23rd overall. Krohn was followed by McBride (2,199, 39th), Hopkins (2,117, 54th), Pennock (1,771, 85th), Gonzalez (1,581, 99th) and Hoskins (1,526, 100th).听
