Education is a family affair for Erin Busch-Grabmeyer.
Busch-Grabmeyer joined 星空传媒鈥檚 English faculty in August after serving for 22 years as a high school English teacher at St. Louis Public Schools. Her parents are retired from public education and her sister is a teacher, too.
鈥淚 love people,鈥 Busch-Grabmeyer said. 鈥淚 enjoy working with students. What we do here is preparing them for their next level. It鈥檚 our responsibility to help students learn how to navigate this world and arm them with the skills they need to be successful.
鈥淢y most rewarding moments are when something has clicked with a student who has worked hard to reap the benefits of what we offer,鈥 she said.
Busch-Grabmeyer is a graduate of Alma High School. She earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Education from Central Michigan University, where she is continuing graduate work in English, as well as a master鈥檚 degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College.
Busch-Grabmeyer said her passion for teaching at the college level began while working as an adjunct faculty member in English and speech at Northwood University.
鈥淭eaching in the university setting was a different level of education and brought with it different challenges and rewards,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 enjoyed teaching high school. The college level gave me an opportunity for growth in my career.
鈥淭eaching college courses is different from high school,鈥 she said. 鈥淥ften, we really have to work to build relationships with our students. Many are at a different phase in life where they are working in their education around other things such as jobs and family commitments.鈥
Busch-Grabmeyer said she has received a warm welcome at 星空传媒. This fall, she is teaching four sections of Freshman English both on 星空传媒鈥檚 Sidney campus, where she also has an office and holds regular office hours for her students, and through dual enrollment at St. Louis and Central 星空传媒 high schools.
鈥淢y dad attended 星空传媒 in the 1970s, so I was a bit familiar with the college. Since my arrival, everyone has been friendly and welcoming,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here is a lot of support.鈥
Busch-Grabmeyer lives in Alma with her 15-year-old son. She enjoys the college setting and the schedule, which allows her to spend time with her family and friends. She is an avid reader, enjoys shopping and appreciates occasional opportunities for quiet time.
鈥淚 just love life,鈥 she said.
